Functional Capacity Development

Practical social work that builds skills, confidence and independence

Gold Coast Social Works supports adolescents aged 13 and over and adults. Functional Social Work focuses on the interaction between a person, their relationships, daily routines, support network and the environments in which everyday life happens.

Connect | Navigate | Grow

Support shaped around meaningful goals

The work begins with the participant's priorities. Strategies are practised in relevant situations and adjusted around communication preferences, strengths, existing supports and the right level of assistance.

Connect

Communication and Social Connection

Build confidence in communicating needs, developing friendships, understanding boundaries and navigating relationships.

  • Expressing needs and asking for help
  • Friendships, relationships and disagreement
  • Boundaries, consent and safer online interactions
Navigate

Emotional Wellbeing and Regulation

Develop the skills to recognise and communicate emotions, manage challenging situations, build resilience and navigate change.

  • Recognising emotions and communicating what is happening
  • Managing change, setbacks and conflict
  • Using practical plans when something unexpected occurs
Grow

Everyday Independence

Strengthen decision-making, problem-solving, flexibility and practical skills that support greater participation in everyday life.

  • Preparing for appointments and speaking up
  • Making supported choices
  • Work, study, transitions and community participation

Practical and measurable

How support is planned and reviewed

The aim is meaningful change in everyday life, not independence at any cost.

  1. Assess

Identify strengths, functional challenges, existing supports and personal goals.

  2. Build

Develop practical communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving and independence skills.

  3. Transfer

Work with families and support workers, with consent, so skills can be practised in everyday settings.

  4. Measure

Review progress against agreed goals, such as increased participation, confidence or reduced prompting.

A complementary role

Working alongside existing supports

Functional Social Work is not another name for Positive Behaviour Support and does not replace occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology or other specialist services. Where roles overlap, goals and responsibilities should be clarified with the participant's consent.

When another service should lead

Urgent safety concerns, severe self-injury, escalating aggression or immediate mental-health crisis require an appropriate urgent or specialist response. Complex behaviour support, communication systems, sensory needs or psychological treatment may require another discipline to lead or co-manage.
